Google Maps Gives Top Reviewers Gold Profiles and AI-Written Captions

What happened

Google announced three updates to its Maps contributor programme on 7 April, all aimed at making it easier for people to leave reviews and share photos — and making the most active reviewers more visible.

The headline change is gold profile indicators for top-level Local Guides. High-scoring contributors now get a gold-coloured profile that stands out in review sections, making it immediately obvious which reviewers are experienced and active. Contributor point totals and badge designs have also been refreshed, with levels displayed more prominently on profiles.

Google also introduced Gemini-powered caption suggestions. When a contributor selects a photo to upload, Google's AI analyses the image and drafts a caption they can edit or discard. The feature is live on iOS in the US, with Android and global rollout planned. Combined with the photo suggestion feature we covered last week, the friction involved in leaving a detailed photo review has dropped significantly.

The updates apply to Google Maps' 500+ million contributors worldwide.

What this means for tradespeople

These changes make it easier for your customers to leave detailed reviews — and make the reviews from your most engaged customers more prominent.

If a homeowner who's an active Local Guide leaves you a 5-star review with photos, their gold profile now makes that review stand out visually against anonymous or low-activity reviewers. For tradespeople, that's free social proof you didn't have to pay for.

The AI caption feature is equally important. A customer who takes a photo of your finished kitchen but doesn't know what to write can now get a suggested caption in one tap. That removes one of the biggest barriers to photo reviews — the blank text box. And photo reviews are significantly more persuasive than text-only ones when homeowners are comparing tradespeople.

What to do about it

The best response is to keep doing what works: ask every happy customer for a review, and make it easy by sending them your Google review link via WhatsApp or SMS straight after the job. The easier Google makes it for customers to leave reviews, the more your consistent asking pays off.

TapReview is a £9/month tool that helps UK tradespeople get more Google reviews by sending automated review requests via WhatsApp and SMS after every job.
