Whitespark 2026: Review Signals Now Carry 20% of Local Pack Ranking Weight — Biggest Rise of Any Factor

What happened

Whitespark has published its 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors report — the industry's most comprehensive annual survey of what actually drives Google Maps and local pack visibility. The headline finding: review signals now account for approximately 20% of local pack ranking influence, up from 16% in 2023.

The survey, based on input from 47 leading local SEO practitioners, confirms that Google Business Profile signals remain the dominant ranking factor at roughly 32%. But it's reviews that saw the biggest jump of any category over the past three years.

Specifically, the factors that gained the most weight were review recency (how recently reviews were posted), review velocity (how steadily they arrive), review sentiment (what customers actually say), and behavioural signals like clicks, calls, and direction requests from the listing itself.

Citation building — once a cornerstone of local SEO — continued to decline in relative importance. The message from practitioners is clear: the fundamentals have shifted towards authentic engagement.

What this means for tradespeople

If you're a plumber in Birmingham or an electrician in Bristol, this data confirms something practical: your Google reviews aren't just social proof for customers — they're directly influencing whether Google shows your business at all.

The shift towards review recency is particularly relevant for trades. A tradesperson with 50 reviews from 2023 is now losing ground to a competitor with 20 reviews from the last three months. Google wants to see that you're actively doing work and that customers are actively reviewing you.

The rise of behavioural signals also matters. When potential customers tap "Call" or "Directions" on your Google listing, Google reads that as validation. An active, complete profile with fresh photos, regular posts, and recent reviews generates more of these interactions — creating a virtuous cycle.

What to do about it

Keep reviews flowing consistently. One or two per week is better than a burst of ten followed by silence. If you're finishing jobs regularly, send a review request after every single one.

Respond to every review — positive and negative. Google factors response rate into ranking calculations, and businesses that respond to all reviews see conversion rates increase by over 16%.

Keep your Google Business Profile active. Add photos of completed work, post updates, and make sure your hours and services are accurate. These interactions feed the behavioural signals that now carry more weight than ever.
