Google Maps Now Lets Customers Leave Reviews Under Nicknames — More Reviews, Less Friction
What happened
Google Maps has rolled out a feature that lets users post reviews under a nickname and custom profile picture instead of their real name and photo. The feature, which began in November 2025 and is now rolling out globally across Android, iOS, and desktop, is the first time Google has formally offered a pseudonymous posting option for reviews.
To use it, customers go to their Google Maps profile, select "Edit Profile," and toggle on the option to use a custom name and picture. The nickname applies retroactively to every review they've ever written — not just new ones.
Importantly, this is pseudonymous rather than truly anonymous. Google still links all activity to the underlying account, and businesses can still report policy-violating reviews through the same channels as before. The reviews carry the same ranking weight as named ones — Google's algorithm doesn't penalise pseudonymous reviews.
What this means for tradespeople
This is likely to increase the number of reviews you receive. Many customers — particularly those who've had sensitive work done (think bathroom renovations, security installations, or emergency callouts) — have been reluctant to leave public reviews under their real name. That barrier is now gone.
For tradespeople, more reviews means better visibility in Google Maps and local search. The review still counts fully toward your star rating, review count, and local pack ranking. The only difference is the customer's name shows as "J.S." or "HappyHomeowner" instead of "Jane Smith."
The flip side: you may also see more negative reviews from people who previously wouldn't have bothered. Responding professionally to every review — positive and negative — matters even more now.
What to do about it
Update your review request messages to mention the privacy option. Something like: "You can leave a review using a nickname if you prefer — just tap your profile picture in Google Maps to set one up." This small addition removes the last excuse for customers who want to help but value their privacy.
If you're already using automated review requests via WhatsApp or SMS, consider adding a line about the nickname option to your templates.
