Google AI Will Soon Call Tradespeople on Behalf of Customers — US Rollout This Summer
What happened
Google announced at I/O 2026 that its AI agents can now call local businesses on behalf of users to gather pricing, availability, and booking information. The feature is rolling out across the US this summer for home repair, beauty, and pet care categories.
Here's how it works: a customer searches for something like "replace a 50-gallon gas water heater." Google's AI calls multiple local businesses, identifies itself as an automated system, and asks three to five questions — do you service this area, what's the price range, when's your soonest opening, do you offer financing. It then reports back to the customer with a comparison of who answered and what they quoted.
Early testing results are stark. Marketing Code reports that out of 8 local appliance repair companies Google's AI called, only 3 answered. Of those, only 1 provided both pricing and availability. The businesses that answered quickly and clearly were presented as the recommendation.
Google picks which businesses to call based on local search rankings — meaning your Google Business Profile, reviews, and local SEO determine whether you even get the call.
What this means for tradespeople
This isn't in the UK yet, but Google's track record suggests it will arrive here. When it does, the phone becomes another ranking factor. If you're a plumber or electrician with a strong Google profile and good reviews, you'll be one of the businesses the AI calls. If your profile is thin or you don't answer, the AI moves on to your competitor.
The businesses that win will be the ones that already rank well locally, answer their phone during working hours, and can give a clear price range quickly. The businesses that lose will be the ones the AI never calls in the first place — because their profile isn't strong enough to surface.
What to do about it
There's no immediate action for UK tradespeople, but this is a strong signal about where Google is heading. The fundamentals that will matter when this arrives are the same ones that matter now:
- Keep your Google Business Profile complete, verified, and active
- Build a steady stream of fresh Google reviews — they're the primary signal Google uses for local ranking
- Answer your phone. When AI calling arrives, missed calls mean missed recommendations
TapReview is a £9/month tool that helps UK tradespeople get more Google reviews by sending automated review requests via WhatsApp and SMS after every job.
